From Ritual to Decentralized Truth
Ancient Roman Augurs served to help societies act in the face of uncertainty, using ceremonial practices to provide a shared basis for decision making. The lituus, a spiral shaped staff carried by Augurs, represented the act of imposing order on ambiguity. The Augur protocol and the Lituus Foundation carry forward this function — replacing what was ritual with cryptography, incentives, and formal rules. Augur is designed as a decentralized oracle for resolving truth, built to operate under adversarial conditions, without relying on authority, or trust in any single actor.
